Myant R&D: Designing an Innovative Model for Sustainable Mask Supply Chains
While the world continues to grapple with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) has become a necessary part of our daily lives. However, the increased production and disposal of PPE, particularly disposable masks, has resulted in a significant carbon footprint and plastic waste problem. By some estimates, over 129 billion masks were disposed of every month in 2020. Early on in the pandemic, Myant recognized the urgent demand to get masks to those in need, while focusing on creating sustainable, environmentally-friendly solutions that generated less waste.
With this in mind, our R&D team recently published an article discussing the need to design and optimize a resilient and sustainable mask supply chain network in Toronto. The proposed model takes into account the operational and disruption risks caused by high-impact crises (e.g., disease outbreaks and natural disasters, such as earthquakes, wildfires, and floods). This research is vitally important, as it can help ensure that masks are available to people who need them during a public health crisis without sacrificing sustainability.
