A New Era of Remote Monitoring, Rehabilitation and Telemedicine Enabled By Textiles to be Showcased at CES 2020 by Myant, Pioneers in Textile Computing

TORONTO, January 10, 2020 – Myant Inc., pioneers in Textile Computing™, will be demonstrating an array of remote monitoring, rehabilitation and telemedicine solutions at CES 2020 (January 7-10, 2020 in Las Vegas) as part of its broader vision to transform human connectedness. By employing textiles that can sense and react to the human body and connecting patients to loved ones, healthcare practitioners, and artificial intelligence, Myant aims to close the gap in the feedback loop that has previously limited existing models of telemedicine and usher in a new era where distance is no longer a barrier to effective care.

Unlocking the Potential of Telemedicine Via Bidirectional Textile Interfaces

The promise of telemedicine has long been conceptually understood but adoption of this model of care has been slow due in part to the inability of healthcare practitioners to accurately assess patients remotely. Even when remote assessment can be done, further diagnostics, treatment, and monitoring visits typically require the patient to come into a clinical setting. A significant gap still exists between the current mode in which telemedicine is deployed and the promise of telemedicine that has long been conceptualized but never realized.

Myant Textile-enabled Model for Telemedicine

Recognizing these challenges, Myant has been applying its unique expertise in the development of textiles that can sense and react to the human body to create solutions that help close the feedback loop between patients and healthcare practitioners. Myant’s solution consists of textile form factors (from everyday clothes to specialized medical garments) that can sense and respond to the human body, as well as a digital platform that employs machine learning that uses the data to deliver relevant insights back to the patient, their healthcare practitioners, and loved ones who care for and support the patient’s wellbeing.

At the most basic level, Myant has created everyday clothing that can provide a minimum viable connection between the patient, their body, and their circle of care. These biometric monitoring garments (e.g. underwear, bra, undershirt, etc.) can provide a continuous and ambient baseline connection to the patient, providing real-time tracking and AI-assisted interpretation of vital biometric measures (like ECG, heart rate, HRV, blood pressure, body temperature, respiration rate, etc.) as well as relevant contextual information (such as recent activity, walking, sleep patterns, location, etc.) to help healthcare practitioners develop a more holistic and nuanced view of the patient’s state. Myant has also been developing specialized therapeutic garments that enable healthcare practitioners to remotely administer and monitor therapy. Modes of therapy that Myant has been working on include garments that can deliver functional electrical stimulation (FES) for stroke and spinal cord injury rehabilitation or muscle atrophy, heating and transcutaneous electrical nervous stimulation (TENS) for cases of total knee arthroplasty and meniscus repair, biochemical sensing targeting biomarkers such as glucose or specific pharmaceutical agents, and many others.

Creating Supportive Social Environment to Promote Better Outcomes

The other critical component of effective remote care involves the social determinants of health, factors which Myant addresses by allowing patients to share their biometric data with loved ones via the Myant Platform. The social environment surrounding a patient (i.e. people who are emotionally and psychologically supporting the patient on their health journey) is known to play a significant role in rehabilitation and recovery, and the Myant Platform empowers patients by allowing them to selectively share information they deem to be relevant with loved ones and caregivers. This enables a deeper and more meaningful connection between the care receiver and the caregivers, strengthening the social support that is known to drive better health outcomes for patients.

The combination of baseline biometric monitoring via clothing, garments that can deliver and track therapy, and a digital platform that fosters social connectedness between the patient and their care circle work together to close the feedback loop needed to realize the true promise of telemedicine. Examples of these garments will be on display at Myant’s booth at CES 2020.

Myant at CES 2020

The application of textile computing to remote monitoring, therapeutics, and care are just one manifestation of what is possible on the Myant Platform, a platform which provides a continuous and ambient connection between people and their bodies, their communities, and their n environments across all aspects of daily life (i.e. home, work, and play). Myant’s presence at CES 2020 was designed to encourage others to envision these possibilities, inspiring the world to challenge the way they see everyday textile and to reimagine the value that these objects can provide. Myant invites you to visit their booth at CES 2020 (Booth #43925, Sands Expo, Health & Wellness) to discover more about a world connected by textile.
